Teen Struck By Lightning Tells His Story
Jonathan Guzman Expected To Recover
by Jim Williams
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
A Chicago teenager who survived a lightning strike spoke to CBS 2 from his hospital bed about a frightening experience.
CBS 2's Jim Williams reports the boy will stay in the hospital at least one more night and is expected to recover.
Jonathan Guzman, 15, is at Children's Memorial Hospital being closely watched by doctors and his family.
He is very lucky. He was hit by lightning and lived to describe it.
"It was bad," he said.
Neighbor Maribel Gutierrez was awakened by thunder, opened her window, reached for her video camera and started shooting from across the street.
Lightning had struck the top of the house, causing minor damage. Moments later, Jonathan is seen in the video walking to the ambulance on his own.
Maribel didn't even realize he had been hit by lightning.
"I actually found out after I put down my camcorder and I went over to see what was going on, why they were taking him away," Maribel said.
Jonathan suffered a delayed reaction. He was OK one second, but in the next moment, he had a pain along the side of his body.
"When it hit me, I didn't feel nothing, but then later on I got the pain," he said.
A family friend, an adult man, was also hit by lightning. He was treated at Loyola Medical Center and released.
When we asked Jonathan what he's going to do when he gets out of the hospital, Jonathan said he'll stay inside and hide for a while.
