Lake County To Get Olympic Equestrian Center
WAUCONDA, Ill. (AP) ―
Officials in Lake County have given preliminary approval to a deal that would bring an Olympic equestrian center to a county forest preserve if Chicago gets the nod for 2016.
Chicago officials had asked Lake County to agree to the $12.5 million center for the 2016 Olympics should the city be selected.
Private contributions and the International Olympic Committee would pay for the facility at the Lakewood Forest Preserve near Wauconda.
The center would include stables for 280 horses and a 15,000-seat arena.
The full Forest Preserve District board is expected to approve the agreement at its meeting Tuesday.
Officials say residents would be able to use the center once the Olympic games are over.
Opponents to the deal say it would bring too much traffic and congestion to the area.
