Principal: 'Marked Change Of Atmosphere' At The School

CHICAGO (CBS) ― The library at the University of Chicago Lab School's high school is closed after some students pulled books off the shelves and damaged some of them.

The incident happened Thursday night in Rowley Library, which is used by students in the high school program known as U-High, at 1362 E. 59th St on the U. of C. campus.

A group of students pulled several books down, creating a "huge mess" and damaging some older editions, principal Matthew Horvat said in a letter to parents.

"Although some may identify this as a prank, we regard it as vandalism," Horvat wrote. "Because the librarians will need to devote much time to restoring the library, it will be closed for the next few days."

Horvat wrote that a small group of students was likely involved, but it has affected the entire community.

"Right now there is a marked change of atmosphere here because of what happened, and it's clear that our initial surprise and disappointment are shared by many," Horvat wrote.

He wrote that the school is discussing the severity of the actions with the student body. There was no mention in the letter of any specific disciplinary action or referral to criminal authorities.
