Elgin Man Charged After Attacking Cops, Police Dog
ELGIN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
An Elgin man who hit two police officers with dinner plates and then used a broken plate to try to stab a police dog was arrested Monday on numerous felony charges, police said.
Officers were called to the home of Jose Cruz, 35, on the 100 block of Franklin Boulevard shortly before 7 p.m. Monday on a report that he was chasing his wife with a hammer, according to police.
When officers entered the home and told Cruz to show them his hands, he grabbed an object off a kitchen shelf and said, "Shoot me," police said.
Officers continued to tell him to show his hands them, but he refused. They then used a pepper ball gun and hit Cruz several times in the chest, but Cruz still would not give up. Police said he reached into a cabinet, grabbed several dishes and began throwing them at officers. One of the dishes left a red welt on an officer's right hand, reports stated.
Cruz grabbed a piece of broken plate and attempted to stab and cut the police dog, Kregin, and then kicked him in the head and on his body.
Officers finally were able to subdue Cruz and place him in custody. Two other officers also suffered minor injuries during the arrest, police said.
Cruz was charged Tuesday with five counts each of aggravated battery and aggravated resisting arrest, one count of injuring and attempting to kill a police dog, and two counts of aggravated assault.
