Viewer Comments: Jay Mariotti, Newspaper Industry
CHICAGO
What do you think if Jay Mariotti's resignation and assertion that newspapers are dying?
Here are some of your responses: I can't wait until the REAL reason he quit comes out. Sean Jay is right. Newspapers are dying a slow but accelerating death. Readership is declining and ad revenues are plummeting. The Sun-Times editor is just talking the party line all the way to the graveyard. I lived in Chicago for 12 years and I didn't always agree with Mariotti's take on things but at least he wasn't boring. MildlyAmused1
Newspapers that don't show the "real meat" - what's really going on in the city are dying, most newspapers, tv & radio stations, have sold out it's people. Lets get back to real news, happenings, events, etc in the city - most newspapers give junk associated press, overseas stories. Lets talk about whats happening or what isn't on the streets. Don't hide the nasty politics of the city, the real news. Most newspaper can then rebound, readers will want to read it. otherwise, forget it, i'm not paying for non worthy crap. john b
It's true, no one that I know subscribes to anything other then Sundays for mainly the coupons, but even those aren't as good as they were. I believe it's more due to PC/liberalism than any web presence, it HAS even wormed its way into sports(whining about female/minority representation on a daily basis)as well as the weather(global warming?), people have their own opinions and are tired of being told they are ignorant or uneducated on a daily basis because our core values don't line up with liberal editors' views. demsarbad
Jay is right, newspapers are dead. I can read the NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times, Chicago Tribune; all free, online at any time. However, I think he should have given more notice to his employer of 17+ years. Kind of a tacky exit, imo. Edward
Love him or hate him, Mariotti is a truth-teller, a fine writer, and worthy of consideration if not agreement. I'll miss his viewpoint, even if I won't miss all of his views. As for newspapers dying...duh. Scott Hess
Jay is right. Look at the readership numbers for newspapers in this country. They did it to themselves. People get sick of the far left bias of the mainstream media. Plus, Jay knows people get their news from other places... cable tv, the Internet, blogs, newsletters... these newspapers (and the Big 3 television networks) no longer have a monopoly. And still newspapers enjoy that Joint Operating Agreement (JOA) protection? What is up with that??? Jim Patterson
I used to enjoy reading the newspaper first thing every morning but I quit reading it years ago because it was so obviously liberal. Wallace Smith
He is ahead of his time. Both major Ky newspapers will fail soon. Lexington's first Ky citizen
Great move on his part. Newspapers are totally dying. My kids are 10 and 8 and I expect they will not be able to save a newspaper from the day they graduate from college. Who under the age of 40 even reads a newspaper - no one. Newspapers will be like dog tracks a relic of a bygone era. John
His "assertion" that newspapers are dying? It's not an "assertion" it's a fact -- do a compare and contrast on newspaper circulation going back, say, 15 years, and it's not arguable Kent Rebman
he is a outspoken, rude jerk an opinionated beyond ordinary. He was a negative influence as a writer. good riddance. He belongs in China. TCtopdog98
Yes, most papers are dying. A few national papers will remain with the NYTimes for liberals, The Wall Street Journal for those of a conservative bent and USA Today for people that have no politics in particular along with a very short attention span. G. Keller
He realizes that the liberal wankers are turning people away. He is smart to go. Newspapers are liberal biased. Joe Peter
It doesn't matter if the newspaper is printed on paper or a computer monitor. It's still a newspaper. 'Nuff said. Ann
That's an easy question .......... look around the newspaper biz, do you know ANYONE that is in a hiring mode? nope! But, there are a hundred newspap[ers that are laying off staff. dave
He is not looking at the future he is acknowledging the present. The newspapers of the past are already undone. For years I have only subscribed to the Washington Times which is a weekly magazine. Robert Lynch
This doesn't surprise me. Mariotti was a punk in Denver, too. In 1980, before heading to the Olympics in South Korea, he wrote a column for the Rocky Mountain News wailing that he feared for his life and that he might never see his wife and child again. (Soviets had recently shot down the KAL jet.) Then and now, it has always been about Jay Mariotti -- first, last and always. Steve
They have been dead for quite some time. He's late... nola
Good Riddance.. - William Sheridan
I'm glad to see him go. I was tired of his anti anything Chicago rants. Also, did you ever notice that when he was right, he was so quick to say 'I was right!',but when he was wrong, he would say 'WE were wrong', always trying to pull us down into his "the glass is always empty" world. Bob
how sad! Jay was not afraid to call the shots as he saw them. He put the blame for team failures where they belonged. Also called out the owners when they did not go after team needs. john luce
Newspapers ARE dead. Just look at the newspaper stocks. Most are 70 - 90% down in the past two years alone. Legacy costs are skyrocketing and they're throwing everyone but top brass out the back door. Under 35s don't subscribe to the 'Pony Express' of news coverage, and won't. That, and their strong liberal slant, means the last person out should shut off the lights, unless they haven't paid that bill, either. Looking forward to more Mariotti online! --cheeseheads4jay
Jay who? Is there an opening for a sportswriter? Pick me, pick me! --Big Dog
I believe he's correct in his assumption that newspapers are finished. I cancelled my subs at Charlotte Observer and Raliegh News this morning --Fred McGee
I absolutely agree with him. Shabby, liberal-biased, inaccurate, tabloid journalism now rules the news. I guess at some point some of you idiots are going to realize that the American people aren't buying your politically correct spin any longer. Wait until the major news programs fail because of lack of advertisers, then maybe we will start getting the news, rather than your spin of the news! --Susan Maragheh
Now I won't have to start my blog, firejaymariotti.com. --Mike
The newspaper owners and editors are in denial as to the cause of the readership decline. Sure some of it due to the decline in reading in general, but a lot has to do with they way they manage the news. If they wrote balanced news and articles, many more conservative readers would subscribe. --Robert J. Cmelak
He's right. The inability of Big News to see the forest for the trees only accelerates the process. And Thank the Lord for that! The century long stranglehold of Big News abusing their control of the free flow of information is precisely why the public are turning away in droves from the continual manipulation of news to fit the agenda of Big News --whraglyn
sounds like total BS. whether newspapers are dying is beside the point. Either way, why would you quit abruptly like that? Something must have happened behind the scenes. Not surprising, given that Mariotti is a moron. --j land
Jay is wrong. Yes, papers are changing and in many cases shrinking but they will not go the way of the buggy whip. --Kevin
Jay is correct. I was working at the San Diego Union-Tribune and 2 1/2 years ago I also quit the sports department, and abruptly, aka on deadline. Tired of working to get my stuff in print and 90 percent of the time it would wind up on the web for free as print space was squeezed due to lack of advertising. Not long after I left the newsroom started experiencing layoffs and buyouts. I picked up and left SoCal and got out of that sorry, thankless business. --Vince, Sparks, NV
As circulation declines and layoffs increase, those left behind grow increasingly less likely to be controversial. I suspect that Jay was asked to do some things not in his nature. I wish both Jay and the Sun-Times the best of luck. --Mike O.
Mariotti was this close to getting fired for making up stories and for filing datelined stories when he hadn't even been to the venue. The Sun-Times booted him out the door with a hearty, "good riddance." --Poojie
DEATH to the MSM!!! --ozymandias888
When your right, your right. Papers are the unabashed mouthpiece of the liberal / socialist agenda creeping like cancer into this country. People are rejecting this on a steady flow. Better news and more unbias/truthful news is out in the web. --Kevin W. Carr
Good riddance, he's the reason I guit reading the Suntimes. --Robert F. Addante
He's exactly right! --Joe Blow
He's right. Newspapers are going the way of buggy whips. Who needs 'em anymore? The Internet is a much better source for all the things that newspapers used to provide, and then there's TV too of course. What's the point of having newspapers? I used to get a newspaper by daily delivery, but now I haven't bought a newspaper in years. Mariotti is smart to dump the dying medium. --Neil H.
Circulation is down everywhere, Drudge links to those stats all the time. But... I think there's more to Jay's leaving that isn't being reported. People don't do that unless they get angry. --PReiner64
He is correct. Newspapers are biased and don't report the truth or facts. They only report what they think is the news. I don't read them anymore. Get my news [and sports] from the web. --Tony Catlender
It was the correct choice for him, but I see the newspapers liberal slant coverage of news is out of touch with the majority of the people who buy the papers. I look at both newspapers and the internet and I'm noticing the Sacramento Bee is publishing too many sympathy news articles oposite of my views which are pretty mainstream for America. Lynda Sutfin
Smart man. Why wait til the ship goes completely under? If the newspapers of America were to just try to be fair and not be shills for the democratic party, just maybe there would be a re-birth.As it stands most of my friends have cancelled their papers. BigArch
Newspapers on newsprint are definitely on their way out, but conveying written information? I'm not so sure. Newspapers are only as good as their sources, and the internet is a wealth of sources (and competition). But CNN is adapting through iReports, that scarf up a lot of source data that is filtered, edited, and distributed. I don't see how a process like this is ever going out of style. William Wallace
The newspaper business isn't the only one crashing from the introduction of the internet. The world has changed, and it's not going back to the way it was. I understand the record companies dying, they were greedy and not open minded. I also understand the end of the newspaper. They've been a tool of the golbalists forever. I say good riddance to both. Andrew Heermans
They're not what they used to be and it's time that they re-tool and adjust to the change. jay is right in the sense that they aren't or won't be as influencial as in the past. As for the Sun Times moaning that they paid him well for 17 years, I believe he EARNED that pay, it certainly wasn't a gift. Bryan Siefried
I agree that newspapers are a dying breed. I think this is due to a combination of thing readers now have access to the internet and cabel tv. Because of these alternate venues many have found that the print media and the big three ABC NBC CBS are so biased that they can no longer be depended on to report the truth. The print media has been responsible for printing classified information that can and has caused harm to our national security. and they also have been shown to be as biased as the big three when it comes to reporting on many fronts. - John
What took him so long...writing has been on the wall, or should i say monitor for more then 5 years. Todd Bennett
Jay is right, of course. Newspapers are dying thanks to their predominately far left leanings. That shouldn't apply to sports, but unfortunately newspapers don't lead with the sports pages. Maybe they should. Danbo
Jay is absolutely right...I canceled my newspaper last month when I discovered 4 of the 5 neighbors on my street stopped subscribing. I find EVERYTHING on the internet now. Dave
Don't care that he quit, and he is right, newspapers are dead. They are dead for a variety of reasons from competition like the internet to anachronistic bias that doesn't play anymore. DaleW
I think he is right. By the time the newspaper rolls in, the news is sometimes 6 to 8 hours old. Online sports is instantaneous and available when I want it. Ken
What are newspapers? Mark Richardson
