I-55 Reopened After Gas Leak Closes Lanes

PLAINFIELD, Ill. (STNG) ― A portion of I-55 in the southwest suburbs near Plainfield has been reopened to traffic Tuesday afternoon following a gas leak and an accident.

I-55 was reopened after a section of the interstate was closed for about two and a half hours between U.S. 52 and U.S. 30 in the Plainfield area after construction crews ruptured a gas main near Black Road about 11:30 a.m.

Nicor Gas was notified about 12:45 p.m. to secure the gas leak, according to a release from the Illinois State Police Joliet District.

The leak was contained about 2 p.m. and all lanes were reopened shortly thereafter.

Traffic was also temporarily snarled farther south on I-55 following an accident south of I-80.
