Red Cross Hosts Gulf Coast Evacuees In Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) ― Several evacuees of Hurricane Gustav have taken shelter in Chicago.

The American Red Cross opened a facility to host evacuees on Tuesday. Among them was 57-year-old Willie Ross, of New Orleans, who fled the storm with his wife and their two sons, ages one and four.

Ross says the family drove to Chicago, where he has relatives. He says after Gustav he's not going back to New Orleans. He says there was no question the family would leave during the storm after they stayed to weather Hurricane Katrina three years ago.

Also Tuesday, the Illinois Air National Guard sent a four-person team and communications equipment to the Gulf Coast from Peoria. The governor also is sending 250 firefighters and 70 fire trucks. Illinois has already sent three helicopter crews.
