Chicago Area Fuel Prices Average Below $4

But Prices May Rise Due To Hurricane Season

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Fuel prices in the Chicago area have stayed below $4 a gallon on average, but according to the AAA Chicago Motor Club, costs are likely to rise because of hurricane season.

AAA Chicago's most recent Fuel Gauge Report estimates that in Illinois, regular unleaded gasoline has decreased 11 cents during the past month, forecasting an average cost of $3.81 per gallon for the month of September, 72 cents higher per gallon than last year.

In northern Indiana, gas prices average $3.83, which is down 8 cents from August and up 75 cents from September 2007, according to a release from AAA Chicago.

"Crude oil prices have decreased, which is being reflected in prices at the pump," AAA Chicago spokeswoman Nicole Niemi said. "However, refinery outages due to hurricanes in the Gulf states could result in fluctuations in the coming weeks."

As of Wednesday morning, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Chicago was $4.257, according to the AAA. A year ago, that same gallon of gas was $3.159 in the city.

In Gary, Ind., the average price of a gallon of gas was $4.241 as of Wednesday morning. A year ago, it was $2.915, according to the AAA.

The average price of self-serve regular unleaded in Cook County is $3.99 a gallon, down 11 cents from last month but 73 cents higher than last year.

In DuPage County, self-serve regular unleaded was $3.90 per gallon, an 8-cent decrease from August and 72 cents higher than last year.

In Kane County, self-serve regular unleaded averages $3.89 per gallon, which is 9 cents lower than last month and 73 cents higher than August 2007.

In Lake County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded averages $3.85 per gallon, which is 11 cents lower than last month and up by 71 cents from last year.

In McHenry County, self-serve regular unleaded averages $3.87 per gallon, 9 cents lower than August and 73 cents higher than September 2007.

In Will County, self-serve regular unleaded averages $3.88 per gallon, 8 cents lower than last month and 69 cents higher than last year.

In Lake County, Ind., self-serve regular unleaded averages $3.83 per gallon, an 8-cent decrease from August' and a 73-cent increase from a year ago.

In Porter County, Ind., self-serve regular unleaded averages $3.82 per gallon, which is 6 cents lower than last month and 79 cents higher than last year.
