The couple found dead in a wooded area of a forest preserve near Calumet City were the parents of CLTV television host Garrard McClendon.
CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports that family and friends gathered at the McClendon's home in Hammond, Ind. Tuesday night. They say you couldn't meet a nicer and more generous couple.
Family members confirm that Milton and Ruby McClendon were found dead in a Cook County forest preserve.
Police have also spent time gathering evidence at the McClendons Hammond home. Police won't say whether anyone forced their way into that home, but did say the couple's car is missing.
Their son Garrard was almost too hurt for words.
Relatives and friends are also devastated.
"This is an amazing tragedy because of the fact the McClendons were a couple that were born in this area," said family friend Jeff Morrow. This community has lost two anchors and it has lost two historians about the city. They could tell you everything about Hammond."
The elderly man and woman whose bodies were found Monday afternoon in a forest preserve in south suburban Calumet City were both shot to death, Tuesday autopsies have determined.
Both deaths have been ruled homicides.
About 12:30 p.m. Monday, Calumet City police responded to the Wentworth Woods Forest Preserve, where a woman walking past the area spotted two bodies, forest preserve district spokesman Steve Mayberry said.
The two were both black and in their 70s, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
They were found about ten feet west of Campbell Road between Michigan City and Pulaski Roads, he said. They were both clothed.
The man was dressed in a multicolored dress shirt with buttons, dark
pants and suspenders. The woman was found dressed in a white shirt and dark pants with no shoes.
Neither victim had identification on them.
Autopsies performed Tuesday found that the man had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and the woman had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to the medical examiner's office. Both deaths were ruled homicides. The two were both found face down in the forest preserve.
Forest Preserve police had initially believed that the woman was beaten.
"Our thoughts are with Garrard and his family at this difficult time," CLTV's General Manager Steve Farber said in a statement.
Police are looking for the couple's car that is missing: a 1997 Cadillac El Dorado. It's a green two-door with an Indiana license plate number 365 ZTN.
