Group Urges City Council To Ban Fois Gras Delicacy
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
Animal rights groups urged the City Council Tuesday to ban the delicacy fois gras.
"I think Americans and restaurants can live and somehow survive without foie gras. Oh, it will be a struggle for some," said State Rep. Robert Molaro from the Southwest Side.
The treat is from duck liver and served at high-end restaurants.
Activists say the way it's made is cruel. The ducks are force-fed grain through tubes down their throats.
"How we treat animals speaks very much to who we are as a society. And the way these ducks are force-fed on these foie gras farms is outside the bounds of acceptable conduct in a society that values compassion," said Gene Bauston with Sanctuary Farm.
Opponents of the ban say the ducks are not abused.
Ald. Joe Moore in the 49th Ward is sponsoring the ban and says opponents get their say at another hearing.
Editor's note: Our initial story posted identified Ald. Ed Smith as the sponsor of this bill. Ald. Joe Moore is the correct sponsor.
