CHICAGO (STNG) ― A 28-year-old man that was killed early Sunday after his apartment caught on fire has been identified.

Adam Barney was killed in his home at 3420 N. Sheffield Ave. in the Wrigleyville neighborhood, a spokesman with the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said. He was pronounced at the Stein Institute at 11:40 a.m.

Police are investigating whether careless use of smoking materials may have caused the blaze, police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor said.

Barney and three other people were inside the apartment when a fire broke out about 8:11 a.m., according to Fire Media Affairs Deputy Director Eve Rodriguez.

The man was found dead in a bedroom of the third-floor apartment, Taylor said.

Three people heard a smoke detector going off and were able to escape harm and evacuate the third-floor apartment, but the man did not get out, Rodriguez said.

There was a working smoke detector inside the apartment and in the hallway of the third floor, Rodriguez said.

Three individuals lived at the apartment, and one person was visiting, but Rodriguez did not know if it was a resident or guest who died.

Crews responded to the scene within three minutes, and the box was struck out at 8:40 a.m.

Firefighters were in the neighborhood Sunday canvassing a two-block area around the home to pass out smoke detectors and literature to residents on the importance of making sure smoke detectors are working, Rodriguez said.

It was the second fatal fire in less than 24 hours in Chicago. 66-year-old Lamar Jackson died in a fire late Saturday night at 7046 S. Racine Av. Two others were hurt in that fire. Investigators were trying to determine if that building had working smoke detectors.
