Elderly Couple Rescued After Driving Car Into Pond
ELGIN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ―
An elderly couple was reported in good condition Thursday afternoon after being rescued from a car in a pond in northwest suburban Elgin.
Authorities said the mishap occurred when the car they were in was accidentally driven into the fishing pond at the Willow Lake Estates retirement community on and became temporarily submerged.
Emergency personnel were called to the scene just after 1 p.m. near the docks of the pond off of Sandy Beach Road.
Elgin Police Sgt. Don Thiel said it appeared the couple was trying to park their car to meet their grandson by the dock to fish. The driver accidentally stepped on the accelerator, causing the car to drive onto the dock and into the water, where it submerged it about three-quarters of the way in.
Witnesses and emergency workers waded into the pond and were able to get the couple out. They were checked by paramedics and allowed to go home, authorities said.
