Eisenhower Re-Opened After Police Chase, Crash

1 Person Transported To Hospital From Burning Car

CHICAGO (CBS) ― The Eisenhower Expressway has re-opened after a police chase and crash shut down westbound lanes west of Austin Boulevard Friday afternoon.

CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports police said the incident began about two miles from the crash site, with a narcotics investigation. Officers had stopped the offender's car for a traffic violation. Police said that driver then tried to get away, and ended up hitting a Chicago police officer.

"During that process of pulling away from the scene, he struck an officer and dragged an officer a short distance and continued on, with officers radioing for additional assistance," said Sal Avila of the Chicago Police Department. "Within a short period of time the offending vehicle was observed traveling on the Eisenhower in the wrong direction. The vehicle was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes."

Eventually the car crashed. Police said that car began to move again and the driver threatened an officer on the expressway. Police then fired shots.

A male passenger in the suspect's vehicle was reportedly wounded and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The police officer who was hit was also taken to the hospital and is reported to be in good condition.
