Man Accused Of Mugging Woman In East Lakeview

Alsworth Carter Accused Of Stealing Purse At Bus Stop

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A Near North Side man was arrested and charged after he allegedly mugged an 82-year-old woman while she was waiting for a bus Sunday afternoon in the East Lakeview neighborhood.

Alsworth Carter, 59, of the 1300 block of North Dearborn Street, was charged with one count of robbery in the attack, which happened about 2:30 p.m. at a bus stop on Sheridan Road and Diversey Parkway, police said.

Carter is expected to appear in Cook County Criminal Court, 2600 S. California Ave., for a bond hearing later Monday.

Police said the woman was waiting for bus when Carter allegedly approached her, pushed her to the ground and stole her purse. He ran away with it and two men who happened to be nearby saw what happened and began to chase him on foot.

Officers on patrol saw the chase and were able to arrest Carter shortly after the incident at 2:40 p.m. at 2815 N. Sheridan Rd., according to police, who said the woman suffered a sore left shoulder and arm but it was not known whether she was hospitalized.
