DUI charges were filed Tuesday in connection with last month's West Side crash that killed a 27-year-old pregnant woman and her premature baby, who died the morning after being delivered by Cesarean section.
James Cox, 39, of the 4300 block of West Maypole Avenue, is charged with aggravated DUI contributing to death, according to police. He is expected to appear for a bond hearing Wednesday.
Cox was originally cited for failure to obey a red light, driving on a revoked or suspended license, and not having insurance, police said.
The Oct. 21 crash at 37 N. Kostner Ave. killed Ivie Brown, who was six-to-seven months pregnant. A baby boy was delivered by Cesarean section following the accident, but died the next morning.
The wreck happened about 11:30 a.m., police said. Brown, of 2958 W. Cortez St., was pronounced dead at 12:13 p.m. at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Three other pedestrians -- another mother and her two children aged 1 and 3 -- were also injured, police said.
Cox was driving a Chrysler minivan south on Kostner when he allegedly disobeyed a red light at Washington and struck an eastbound 2003 Ford van, which then struck four pedestrians, according to police.
