Family Wants Answers In Will County Double Murder

JOLIET, Ill. (CBS) ― Who could kill a toddler's parents while he slept only feet away? That is what a Will County family still wants to know, months after it happened. CBS 2's Dana Kozlov talked with them Thursday night, and spent time with that little boy.

Two-year-old Shaun Charles' face still lights up when he sees pictures of his mom Angela and dad Brian. But four months ago to the day, he was in his crib when someone came into his family's Joliet area home and shot his parents to death.

"And it's sad to see Shaun run to that window, look outside and call for his mom," said Angela's mother Jackie Roth.

The murders remain unsolved to the frustration of Angela's mother Jackie Roth and her father Wade Rickenberger. And they say Will County Sheriff's investigators are slow to return calls.

"I was hoping they would get somewhere. They haven't told us too much throughout," Rickenberger said.

When asked if Angela or Brian were ever concerned for their safety, Roth said, "Yes, they were. I can't really tell you too much about that. But they were."

Besides Shaun, the Charles' also had temporary custody of Brian's two children from a previous marriage with a custody hearing pending.

His ex-wife Kathleen Rundle told police she discovered their bodies at 7 a.m. on March 2nd when she went to their home to pick up videos for the two older children who were visiting her.

Rundle was questioned by police and retained an attorney. Tonight, she referred CBS 2 to her lawyer. A Will County Sheriff's Dept. spokesperson says this is still a very active investigation and they have a couple of suspects in their sights.

So as Angela's parents hope and wait for answers, they ease their pain by focusing on their grandson Shaun.

"It's sad when I'm here by myself. It really is, but that little boy keeps me going," Roth said. "I just tell him mom's in heaven, so is dad. I don't know what else to tell him at this time. He's only 2 years old."

There was no sign of forced entry to the Charles' home, leading some to believe they knew their killer.

Will County investigators say evidence has been processed. They are just waiting for "some things to materialize."
