Colorado Man Drowns Working In Deerfield Pond

DEERFIELD, lll. (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A Colorado man apparently drowned while cleaning a pond Tuesday afternoon outside a north suburban company.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the man as Michael Johnson, 45, of 3 Taos Cir. in Fountain, Colo. He was pronounced dead at 3:23 p.m. at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

Lake County Sheriff's police responded about 1:15 p.m. to a report of a possible drowning at Baxter Heath Care at 1 Baxter Pkwy. in Deerfield, according to a sheriff's office release.

According to police, a 45-year-old diver for U.S. AquaVac was contracted by Baxter to clean ponds on Baxter property when a fellow worker noticed he was struggling in the pond and attempted to assist him.

The co-worker was unable to help and had to be taken by ambulance to Highland Park Hospital after suffering hypothermia, the release said.

The victim was eventually removed from the pond by rescue workers from the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District and the surrounding area, the release said.

He was flown by Flight for Life helicopter to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead.

Although detectives believe the incident to be an accident, sheriff's office police continue to investigate.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
