Thief Attacks, Robs Employee At Cubby Bear

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― The manager of Wrigleyville's Cubby Bear lounge was beaten and robbed by a man who got inside the bar after closing time early Friday morning.

About 2:30 a.m., an armed man tied up a manager at the popular bar at 1059 W. Addison St. before striking him on the head an unknown object, possibly a gun, police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor said. The bar had closed at 2 a.m.

The suspect showed the manager his gun and took his wallet, Taylor said. The manager, described as a man in his 30s, escaped when the gunman left to search the bar's office.

It was not clear if the man stole anything else from the bar.

The employee was treated and released from Thorek Memorial Hospital, Taylor said.

The suspect, dressed in all black, was a black male 25 to 30, 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, police said.

At a City Hall news conference Friday, Chief of Detectives Tom Byrne said the manager didn't stand a chance. "We had an individual, an offender [who] was, in essence, laying in wait for the manager. Tried to get at the safe. Did get some money."

Asked whether the offender was waiting outside the bar, Byrne said, "No. Actually somehow within the facility itself. ... Whether he stuck around [inside] or how he got in [police don't know]. It was after closing and he was laying in wait dressed in black. He was trying to conceal his identity."

Cubby Bear management could not be reached for comment Friday morning.

Belmont Area detectives are investigating.
