A 29-year-old woman has pleaded not guilty in two separate cases this week for allegedly stabbing her 10-month-old daughter before boarding a South Side CTA bus last month and stabbing a 3-year-old girl and another woman.
Nancy F. LaRoche of 4756 S. Indiana Ave. was indicted on 16 different counts ranging from aggravated battery of a child and attempted vehicular hijacking to attempted first-degree murder for allegedly attacking her 10-month-old daughter in their South Side home and then attacking a woman and child on a CTA bus, which she allegedly tried to take over, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin said.
LaRoche pleaded not guilty Thursday to the charges involving the attack on her daughter and then the woman and child on the bus, Conklin said.
Prosecutors claim LaRoche woke up in her Indiana Avenue home on the morning of Jan. 9 and used scissors to stab her 10-month old daughter in front of her boyfriend. The baby suffered five puncture wounds to the eye, critically injuring her. LaRoche then fled the home and boarded a southbound No. 29 State Street bus at 47th and State streets.
While on the bus, authorities say she attacked a woman holding a 3-year-old girl also attempting to stab the woman in the eyes. Because she wore glasses, the woman's eyes were protected, Conklin said, citing court records. The woman suffered cuts to her face.
After walking to the back of the crowded bus waving the scissors, LaRoche tried to take control of the bus but was unsuccessful. Instead, she opened the doors and tossed the 3-year-old girl off the bus, court records said.
Once LaRoche was arrested, she allegedly attacked two officers while in custody at Wentworth Area Headquarters. LaRoche was also indicted on four counts of aggravated battery of a police officer and two counts of resisting/obstructing an officer for the attack involving the officers, Conklin said. She pleaded not guilty to those charges on Friday, Conklin said.
The 27-year-old woman on the bus and her daughter were treated and released from Provident Hospital of Cook County with non-life-threatening injuries, police News Affairs said.
LaRoche, who was ordered held without bond, is scheduled to appear in court on March 10.
