Off-Duty Cop Dies After Shooting Himself

CHICAGO (STNG) ― An off-duty police officer died Thursday morning after apparently shooting himself on the Northwest Side on Wednesday evening.

The off-duty officer shot himself on Wednesday afternoon at a location in the 4800 block of North Nottingham Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer John Henry.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed that a 35-year-old man died at 4824 N. Nottingham Ave. of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge at 6 a.m., the medical examiner's office said.

The shooting occurred in the Albany Park neighborhood, but an Albany Park District captain said the officer did not work in the district.

Grand Central Area detectives are investigating.
