We asked viewers if you think same-sex couples should have the right to marry in Illinois. Here are some of your responses. Yes, I believe that they need to be given the same legal rights as straight couples. My aunt was with the same partner for 40 years and when she was dying, it was appalling that that committed partner did not have any rights and was NOT considered family. --JoAnn Thompson
Absolutely. I'm a straight, middle aged man. I believe it's a civil rights issue. Same-sex couples are not 2nd class citizens and should be allowed all of the rights of marriage if they wish it. --Dennis Murphy

Of course they should be able to marry! Who are we to decide who someone else should be allowed to marry. We don't tell Repubicans that they can't marry a Democrate, why say a man can't marry a man. What's next? Telling people how many kids they can have, what car they can drive, or what food we can eat? P.S - I am heterosexual and happily married, it isn't just the homosexuals that want this. --Corinne McLachlan

Yes they should. Though civil unions provide some of the many rights marriage does, there are many other far reaching rights they do not. Fo example, filing taxes jointly or speaking on behalf of one's spouse who can't speak for themselves. I've been in a same-sex relationship for 20 years now. Why shouldn't I have the same rights to marry simply because the person I fell in love with and am still in love with is male like me? Or, an alternative would be to allow heterosexual couples only the rights civil unions provide. What's good for the goose... --Michael
