Viewer Comments On Foie Gras Ban

We asked if you support or oppose the city's foie gras ban. Here is what you had to say:

Support. Anyone who thinks these animals enjoy the process of being force fed, as one chef suggested today, should go to a site called www.gourmetcruelty.com, and see these animals choking to death, drowning in their own vomit, living with the pain that accompanies a diseased organ, etc. I'm not hungry enough to eat any thing knowing that it was put through that kind of suffering just so I can eat a diseased organ. It would be nice to see your news coverage a bit more balanced -reporting the mayor calling the ordinance "silly" without presenting the reality of the situation is not exactly accurate reporting. - Mary

I didn't support the ban. It was silly. As far as I know, there are only 2 farms in this country that produce foie gras. I'm guessing that most Chicagoans haven't even tried it before. It seems to me that it would be more humane to chickens, cows, us humans, and earth in general to ban McDonalds. Why not pick on something that is common, causes lots of damage to the environment, and is completely and utterly unhealthy? Or, better yet, focus on issues that every day Chicagoans have like lousy city schools, crappy post offices, and terrible traffic. It was just silly. – Marianne

I support it! Why on earth would we impose extreme cruelty on animals just for a delicacy? Culinary tastes can re-adapt. Cruelty cannot be undone. Humans are kind by nature and most of us would run from seeing any animal being beaten or treated with extreme cruelty. Why tolerate it when it is done behind the scenes? It took courage for Chicago to stand up for animals, and it is sad to see it give in to pressure. – Dhenu Salva

This is typical if the idiots in Chicago government, where only ignorance outpaces stupidity and common sense is a scarce commodity. I heard that the alderman have plans to outlaw left turns and raising your voice in public next... You would think the voters in our city can wake up and vote these morons out, but I guess we get what we deserve. A mayor that placates the poor with government cheese while the substantive issues whither and the politicians line their pockets with stolen public money...And they just riased the sales tax to 10.5% and we just continue to take it. God bless America! In 50 years when the dream of the USA implodes, you can remember it started here in CHICAGO!!! --Dan

Let's not worry about something so stupid. How about children killing children, gas & food prices, an idiot running the country, people losing their homes and Todd Stroger trying to drive everyone out of Cook County. --Tom

I hope the City of Chicago has finally come to their senses. Foie Gras is a delicacy and I have missed it. If there ever was a stupid law passed that was it! --Angela Cannon

As with any law that promotes anti-cruelty to animals, I support the ban. Have the chefs who protest the law, citing how 'unsophisticated' it makes Chicago look considered how 'unsophisticated' force-feeding poultry (to the point of liver damage) is? As with veal & many other animal-based foods, I'm willing to bet that the great majority of customers who order & eat Foie Gras have no idea what kind of inhumanity goes into creating the dish. Ignorance is bliss...? --Sarah Grapsas

I adamantly oppose the foie gras ban. Give me a break. We've been eating birds forever. What's next? No turkey at Thanksgiving? Have you ever had foie gras? It's an absolutely delicious delicatessen that everyone should be able to enjoy at fine restaurants. --Melissa McLeod

I support the ban on foie gras! If the ban 'makes Chicago look unsophisticated,' I'd prefer to seem a bumpkin. Kindness to animals is NEVER "silly." --Jean SmilingCoyote

Who the heck cares about such nonsense. Isn't it time the government stops deciding what's best for the public? Get on with really important issues!! --Phyllis Laba
