Dubuque, Iowa (STNG) ― A Chicago Police officer has been sentenced to five years in prison for beating an Iowa college student to the point of brain injury and broken nose and jaw.

An Iowa judge sentenced Michael Mette Monday following his conviction for an assault causing serious injury, said Assistant Dubuque County attorney Timothy Gallagher.

The incident occurred in October 2005 near the University of Dubuque campus.

An altercation ensued after Mette, then 28, was hit by Jake Gothard, 20, over a dispute involving a cell phone.

Mette, who was in Dubuque visiting a brother, retaliated, Gallagher said, with a beating that caused severe injuries including two brain bleeds.
