Rescued Labrador Retriever Is New Canine Cop

Pantera Was Rescued From Southwest Suburban Shelter

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A rescued Labrador retriever from a southwest suburban shelter will be the newest addition to the Chicago Police Department's canine unit.

Pantera, a 16-month-old rescued from the Chicago Ridge Animal Welfare League, demonstrated a "high degree of maturity" when Officer Steve Martinez found him in May, according to a release from police.

Pantera has joined the Organized Crime Division as part of the canine narcotics section, and since hitting the streets in October, has recovered evidence and helped police execute search warrants, the release said.

After being trained in narcotics detection techniques, Pantera became the department's youngest certified canine on the streets, the release said.

Police hope to do more work with animal shelters following the positive experience with Pantera, the release said.

"Our canine unit is a critical asset for the Narcotics Section," Dep. Supt. Steven Peterson said in a statement. "We are very fortunate that Chicago Ridge Rescue had called about Pantera. As staunch supporters of canines, we view this as a win-win situation -- the department gets an excellent canine partner, and Chicago Ridge finds a good home for Pantera."
