Explosion Blows Out Part Of Buffalo Grove Home

BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. (STNG) ― A northwest suburban homeowner was injured and a section of his home blown away in an explosion Monday afternoon that appears to have been intentionally sparked.

About 2:40 p.m. Monday, police were notified of a despondent person at a home in the 600 block of Macarthur Drive in Buffalo Grove. That person was determined to be the homeowner, Buffalo Grove police spokesman Todd Kupsak said.

When officers got to the scene they detected the odor of natural gas and tried to make contact with the homeowner, Kupsak said. As officers spotted the man in the home, there was an explosion, which took out the northwest side of the home.

The homeowner was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights with non-life-threatening injuries, Kupsak said.

No one else, including neighbors or fire or police personnel, were injured and no neighboring structures sustained any damage, he said.

The man's age was not yet known.

The fire has since been extinguished and gas service was not affected, Kupsak said.

It was not yet known why the homeowner was despondent.
