Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle won his first Gold Glove Tuesday, the first Sox player in 11 years to be honored for his fielding excellence.
The Gold Glove is another feather in the cap for Buehrle, who tossed his first perfect game in July, his second career no-hitter. Buehrle also won a World Series title with the White Sox in 2005.
Buehrle joins Jim Kaat as the only pitchers in team history to earn the honor recognizing exceptional defense. It's the first Gold Glove for a White Sox player since Robin Ventura won a Gold Glove at third base in 1998.
Not that the Sox haven't had excellent fielders in the past decade. In particular, third baseman Joe Crede and center fielder Aaron Rowand were defensive standouts for the White Sox for years, but never quite reached official Gold Glove status before leaving the team.
Buehrle had a .982 fielding percentage with one error and 41 assists in 2009.
Also among first-time Gold Glove winners in the American League on Tuesday were Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria and Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones.
Los Angeles Angels center fielder Torii Hunter and Seattle right fielder Ichiro Suzuki both won for the ninth straight year.
New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter won his fourth Rawlings Gold Glove Award and teammate Mark Teixeira won his third at first base. Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer and Detroit Tigers second baseman Placido Polanco each earned their second Gold Glove.
Jeter and Teixeira helped lead the Yankees past Philadelphia last week for the team's 27th World Series championship.
National League winners will be announced Wednesday.
