A West Side man charged of raping two women in the Bucktown neighborhood has been denied bond Tuesday afternoon. One incident occured almost five months ago, the other just Monday morning.
Damario McNeil, 31, of the 1900 block of South Avers Avenue, was charged with several felonies late Monday night, police said.
The latest assault happened at 3:50 a.m. Monday in the 2000 block of West Charleston Street, police said. The victim was a 29-year-old woman.
The man was yanking his pants up when Shakespeare District officers responded, police said. He ran, but they caught him within a block. Officers made the arrest at near Armitage and Damen avenues, and recovered a kitchen knife and gloves.
The suspect was caught on one of 16 surveillance cameras at nearby FruitFlowers, 2148 N. Damen Ave. The cameras show a hooded figure jumping from behind a young woman and pulling her to the ground. Seconds later, she is pulled off camera to an alley where police say she was sexually attacked.
McNeil is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault, and aggravated armed kidnapping in the case.
McNeil is also charged with
raping an 18-year-old woman around 4 a.m. Feb. 2 in the 2300 block of West Moffat Street.
In that incident, the victim was walking north on Western Avenue to the CTA Blue Line Western stop when a man, allegedly McNeil, approached her from behind near Cortland Street. The man put a knife to her throat, covered her mouth and forced her into a gangway about a half a block away and raped her, police said.
At some point before the sexual assault, the woman tried to text someone on her phone, but the attacker stole the cell phone and fled the scene. It was not known whether the person she was texting received a message.
The woman went home and was hospitalized after talking to police.
McNeil has not been charged in any other cases,
but police have been investigating his involvement in two more, both in the Wicker Park/Bucktown area. On Feb. 18, a woman was accosted by a man with a knife as she walked from the Western Avenue Blue Line stop at 2:30 a.m. She was sexually assaulted in the 2100 block of North Maplewood Avenue.
In another case, back on Sept. 26, 2008, a woman was sexually assaulted in the 1700 block of North Marshfield Avenue.
Calumet Area detectives are also investigating McNeil in connection with a series of sexual assaults on the city's Far South Side, police said.
The suspect has a history of domestic violence, according to court records. He also had three drug arrests in the 1990s and was sent to prison for five years in 1999, the records show.
McNeil is expected to appear at noon in Violence Court (Br. 66) at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse, 2600 S. California Ave.
