No Bond For Killer Charged With Burning Toddler

Convicted Killer Michael Barnes Charged With Aggravated Battery Of A Child

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A convicted child killer and registered sex offender, charged with bathing a 2-year-old boy in scalding hot water on the South Side, was ordered held without bond on Tuesday.

Michael Barnes, 49, of 5204 S. Honore St. was charged early Tuesday with aggravated battery of a child -- a Class X felony, according to a police report.

At a hearing Tuesday before Associate Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil, he was ordered held without bond, according to Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton.

Barnes is listed in the Illinois Sex Offender Registry for a 1980 conviction in Cook County with molesting and killing a 13-year-old. Barnes was 34 at the time, according to the site.

Police said Barnes was on parole at the time of Monday's incident, having been released in May 2004.

On Monday at 8:45 a.m., Felice Toney, Barnes' roommate, told police she returned home to find her 2-year-old son Khanerion Toney with second-degree burns on his shoulder, back, buttocks, genital area and both legs, according to the report.

Barnes told her he had given the child a bath because the toddler had defecated on himself. Barnes allegedly said he didn't see any burns after he bathed the child, according to the report.

He allegedly recanted that statement later and said he realized the child was struggling during the bath as a result of the water being scalding hot, according to the report.

Toney took her son to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where he was found to have suffered second-degree burns over 30 percent of his body. Wentworth Area detectives then went back to the Honore address and arrested Barnes without incident.

The child remained in serious condition Tuesday, according to police.

Barnes is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing July 27 at South Felony Court, (Br. 48), 155 W. 51st St., Simonton said.
