Man Suffered 'Cardiac Episode' Before I-55 Crash

BOLINGBROOK, Ill. (STNG) ― A northwest suburban man suffered a "cardiac episode" before losing control of his semi truck and crashing into a ditch early Wednesday near southwest suburban Bolingbrook.

Killed was Terrence J. DeCaluwe, 51, of Mount Prospect, according to the Will County Coroner's office.

An autopsy Wednesday found DeCaluwe experienced a "cardiac episode," the coroner's office said.

The incident happened on the northbound Stevenson Expressway (I-55) just south of Route 53 about 1 a.m., Illinois State Police Joliet District Sgt. Falat said.

The driver of a semi lost control and drove into a right ditch, according to police. The trucker "drove off the interstate and rolled over," coming to rest on the truck's side on East Frontage Road, Falat said.

The driver was dead on the scene and the Will County Coroner's office was notified, Falat said.

No one else was in the truck and it did not strike any other vehicles, Falat said. It was not immediately known what the truck was hauling.

DeCaluwe was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, police said.

A final cause of death is pending police, autopsy and toxicological reports, the coroner's office said.

State Police are investigating the crash.
