Truck Flips Over, Spills Beer On Eisenhower Ramp

40,000 Pounds Of Beer Spill Onto Grass

HILLSIDE, Ill. (CBS) ― A semi-trailer truck flipped over on the ramp between the Tri-State Tollway and the Eisenhower Expressway early Tuesday, leaving 40,000 pounds of beer lying out on the grass.

No one was seriously injured, traffic snarls were minimal and the beer company will be contacted to see if they want to salvage any intact cans of Miller beer, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Robert Fierstein said.

"I would advise nobody to go out there and get themselves a six-pack," Fierstein said. "There are plenty of cops on the scene."

Sometime after 6 a.m., the truck drove onto the ramp linking the southbound Tri-State Tollway to the eastbound Eisenhower Expressway (I-290), Fierstein said.

The semi-tractor trailer rolled over, ripping its lid and losing most of the load, he said. The driver sustained minor cuts and bruises to his face and was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

The truck was turned upright just before 7 a.m., Fierstein said. Minor traffic backups in the area were due to "rubberneckers," he said.

Nonetheless, the ramp was blocked after the crash, and traffic jams mounted along both the Eisenhower and the Tri-State near the scene.

Fierstein said police believe driver error is to blame for the incident, and have not cited him with anything at this point.

The investigation is ongoing, and the truck will also be inspected.
