Man Found Dead After Fire Was Beaten To Death

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― A man found unresponsive by firefighters after a Friday morning fire in the Northwest Side Albany Park neighborhood was beaten to death, an autopsy determined Saturday.

Firefighters responded to a basement fire in the 3300 block of North Harding Avenue about 4:15 a.m., according to police News Affairs Officer Gabrielle Lesniak. Afterwards, crews searched the building and a man—reportedly in his 30s—was found unresponsive on the second floor.

He was taken to Our Lady of Resurrection Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 5:15 a.m., Lesniak said.

Detectives are conducting a murder investigation, although it was unclear Friday night what caused the man's death, according to Lesniak, who could not confirm whether the fire was being investigated as an arson.

A Saturday autopsy determined the man, who remained unidentified, died of multiple injuries from an assault, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. His death was ruled a homicide.

Grand Central Area detectives are investigating, and police could not provide further details Saturday afternoon.
