A Barrington High School student charged with sexual assault will meet with high school officials Friday after being released Thursday.
Bruce Johnston, 18, 807 Roberts Road, Tower Lakes, had his bond and charges reduced at a court hearing Thursday, set up by his attorney Robert Hanaford. His bond was reduced from $150,000 to $10,000 and one sexual assault charge dismissed. Johnston was released in the early afternoon Thursday after posting 10 percent of his $10,000 bail, according to officials at the McHenry County Jail.
Johnston was arrested April 26, charged with two counts of sexual assault against a 17-year-old female and a minor female, both also students at Barrington High School. The alleged incidents both took place at a private residence in Barrington Hills the weekend of his arrest.
High School officials will meet with Johnston and his family today.
Community Unit School District 220 Superintendent Tom Leonard said today's meeting will be the first with Johnston. Johnston could face suspension, expulsion or outplacement, in which he could continue his studies at another school, via online credit retrieval or another option.
"My feeling is hopefully in working with the student and his parents, we'll come up with something agreeable to all parties," Leonard said.
Any student suspended or expelled is not allowed to participate in any school-related activities, including athletic events, prom and the high school graduation ceremony, Leonard said.
"Our main concern is to make sure the educational environment at the high school is not compromised in any way," Leonard said.
Johnston is due in court May 20 for status on subpoena and again July 8 for status on a trial date.
