Man In 'Crude Disguise' Robs Bank, Gets Nothing

But Schools Are Locked Down When He Escapes

WBBM 780 and the STNG Wire contributed to this report.
OAK LAWN, Ill. (CBS) ― An apparently armed man, wearing a "crude disguise" and fake mustache that appeared to be falling, off tried unsuccessfully to rob a bank Friday morning in Oak Lawn. Two nearby schools were locked down when he escaped.

The attempted robbery occurred about 7:40 a.m. as employees were opening the Standard Bank and Trust at 4700 W. 111th St. in Oak Lawn, according to FBI spokesman Tom Simon.

"They [employees] were approached by a Hispanic male, who pushed them into the bank, then further herded them into the employee break room while verbally threatening them with a weapon," Simon said. The robber also referred to an unseen co-conspirator, who he said was waiting outside, Simon added.

"At one point he pulled up his shirt and showed what appeared to be a gun tucked into his pants -- it might have been a fake gun but the employees were not taking any chances," Simon said.

He left them in the break room and went into the main banking area, but apparently didn't realize that "banks do not leave stacks of cash lying around when they're not open,'' Simon said.

The robber left the building empty-handed and no bank assets were reported missing.

But Kolmar School, at 10425 S. Kolmar Ave. about a mile north, was locked down after the man escaped. Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School on nearby 99th Street, also kept kids inside until police give the all clear. Police said they did not order the lockdowns.

The man was described as in his 30s, 5-foot-11 and 250 pounds. He spoke in unaccented English and was wearing a "crude disguise" -- sunglasses, white surgical tape across his nose, a fake mustache that appeared to be coming unglued and a stocking cap over a cheap pony tail wig, Simon said.

He was also wearing blue sweatpants and a blue sweatshirt.

"Halloween came early," Simon said.

It was unknown how he got away and there was no information on the possible co-conspirator, Simon said.

The FBI, which is awaiting bank surveillance photos, is investigating, Simon said.
