Hundreds Evacuated In Aurora Gas Leak

AURORA, Ill. (Aurora Beacon News) ― Aurora police and firefighters are evacuating an estimated 200 to 300 people Monday afternoon from two apartment buildings on the near West Side.

Firefighters said a large gas main break in a sewer project on River Street prompted the evacuation of buildings at 430 N. River St. and 111 West Park Ave.

No injuries were reported.

Residents were not able to use their vehicles to leave the area and most walked to the nearby Prisco Community Center where officials designated as the evacuation center.

Buses were on the scene at about 3 p.m. to take the elderly and others to the center.

Nicor Gas reportedly asked for the evacuation after a gas line was broken during sewer work.

Residents were transported to the nearby Prisco Community Center to wait while the leak is repaired.
