Police Probe Murder Of 2 Men In Albany Park

Victims Shot In Alley Near Kedzie And Lawrence

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) ― Police on Monday are investigating the slaying of two men who were shot during a gang-related attack in an Albany Park neighborhood alley over the weekend.

Two men -- one identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office as Eric Mendoza and the other identified by Chicago Police at Jose Mejia -- were walking through an alley behind the 4800 block of North Troy Street, close to Kedzie and Lawrence avenues, when a red vehicle approached and a man exited and opened fire about 12:10 a.m. Sunday, police said.

The gunman got back into the vehicle, which fled south, according to police, who said Mendoza suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Mendoza, 21, was dead on the scene, according to the medical examiner's office. An autopsy Sunday found he died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death has been ruled a homicide.

Mejia was initially taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the neck, but later died at the hospital, according to police.

Mejia, 34, of 1318 N. Artesian Ave., was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center at 4:33 p.m. Sunday, police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Monday.

The shooting is believed to be gang-related both of the dead men allegedly had gang affiliations, police said.

Grand Central Area detectives are investigating and no one was in custody as of 1 p.m. Monday.
