Rezko Fitted With Electronic Monitoring Device
Democrats Concerned About What He Might Tell Prosecutors
by Mike Flannery
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
Tony Rezko returned to court today for the second time since returning from the Middle East.
He's taken twenty trips abroad in the last two years and prosecutors say he's a flight risk.
CBS 2's Political Editor Mike Flannery reports Rezko's now wearing an accessory that will track his every move.
After being fitted by federal authorities with an electronic monitoring device today, Tony Rezko offered reporters only stoic silence.
A source close to top Illinois Democrats said that there is concern about what Rezko might tell prosecutors, should he decide to cooperate with some or all of the multiple investigations into Governor Blagojevich's administration.
Before wheeling and dealing at the highest levels of Illinois politics, the 51-year-old Rezko had already led a remarkable life.
He moved to the U.S. from Middle Eastern Syria in 1979, studying engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Married to wife, Rita, for 22 years, Rezko has three teenage children and 50 to 60 other relatives in the Chicago area.
While he's been living in this north suburban mansion, he's fallen tens of thousands of dollars behind in mortgage and property tax payments. The lender filed suit to take back the big place.
Some relatives joined Rezko in putting up $2 million of family property to secure his pre-trial bond, including his own second home in Lake Geneva, Wisc., as well as properties in Libertyville, Wilmette, Palatine, Chicago's Chinatown and Southwest Side, Oak Lawn, Orland Park and Orland Hills.
