Multi-Car Crash Shuts Down Expressway, Kills Two
CHICAGO (CBS) ―
Two people are dead after a multi-vehicle crash shut down parts of the Stevenson Expressway for hours.
It happened about 1 p.m. in the southbound lanes, just north of Harlem Avenue. Lanes weren't reopened until just before 6 a.m.
State police say they're still not sure how events unfolded, but seven vehicles including two semis were involved.
The northbound lanes also were closed for a time to allow a Loyola Medical Center helicopter to airlift victims.
The driver at the front end of the crash tells what he saw.
"I heard a loud noise, looked in my mirror, saw a semi jackknife. Two seconds later, a Jeep rear ends me," Omar Majdobah said. "It was mayhem. Four or five cars, two nearly totaled, two semis hugging each other."
As many as five other people were injured in the crash. Police say none of those injuries are life threatening.
The victims who died were a man and a woman. Their names are being withheld at this time.
