Man Held Without Bond In Shooting of Teen Girl

CHICAGO (STNG) ― A man was charged and held without bond Sunday in the May 26 murder of a 15-year-old girl chatting with friends on the sidewalk near her grandmother's South Side home.

Prentice Shipp, 18, of the 7100 block of South Woodlawn Avenue was charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder for the shooting, police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti said.

A judge ordered Shipp be held without bail during a Sunday morning bond hearing, a court spokesman said.

The murder happened May 26 on the sidewalk at 69th Place and Dorchester Avenue.

Sharkelia Taylor, of Gary, Ind., was standing on the sidewalk talking with a friend when shots rang out. Taylor allegedly pushed an 11-year-old friend out of the way when she was struck and killed, a neighbor said.

Taylor often came to Chicago to visit her grandmother who lived in the South Shore neighborhood.

According to police, 15 teenagers were standing in the mouth of an alley when gunfire erupted from a black Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Another teenage girl was shot in the leg in the incident.

Taylor, an eighth grader, was shot in the back and died on the scene.

Details on Shipp's arrest or a motive for the shooting were not available Sunday evening.
