ROSEMONT, Ill. (CBS) ―
The mayor of Rosemont is fighting to expand gambling in the Chicago area, and hopes to bring a casino to his near northwest suburb.
Bradley Stephens became mayor after his father, Donald Stephens, died in April.
The Chicago Tribune reported that the new mayor wants Gov. Rod Blagojevich and the Illinois General Assembly to approve government-owned casinos in Rosemont and Chicago, and a privately-owned casino in the southern suburbs.
Stephens said his proposal could bring in more than $1 billion in annual revenue.
Rosemont village officials had to abandon previous plans to put up a casino two years ago, whne the Illinois Gaming Board voted to revoke the license of the bankrupt Emerald Casino.
Top officials at Emerald were accused of lying to regulators, and some investors allegedly had ties to organized crime.
