Attorney: Sorich Has Testified Before Grand Jury
No Word On What He Was Asked About
CHICAGO (AP) ―
The attorney for
Mayor Richard M. Daley's former patronage chief says his client has testified before a federal grand jury.
Robert Sorich was convicted of mail fraud last month after prosecutors accused him of being part of a hiring fraud scheme designed to load the city of Chicago's payroll with campaign workers.
Attorney
Thomas Anthony Durkin says Sorich was questioned before the grand jury earlier this week. But Durkin declined to say precisely what questions Sorich was asked.
At his trial, witnesses described how Sorich ordered test results falsified to make certain that campaign workers got jobs. He also gave marching orders to groups of city employees who served as precinct workers at election time to make sure Daley and candidates he backed were elected.
Daley has not been accused of any wrongdoing.
