R. Kelly Case Set For Trial
Child Pornography Case Against R&B Star Has Been Pending 5 Years
CHICAGO (STNG) ―
The criminal case against R&B star R. Kelly which has been pending for five years is headed to trial at last.
At a court hearing Wednesday, Judge Vincent Gaughan said Kelly's trial on child pornography charges would begin Sept. 17. Gaughan met with Kelly, his lawyers and the lead prosecutor on the case for over an hour Wednesday. When they emerged from Gaughan's chambers in the Criminal Courts Building, the judge announced the trial date and said the two sides have agreed on what questions potential jurors can be asked.
Assistant State's Attorney Shauna Boliker, who is prosecuting the case, declined to comment, as did Kelly's lawyers, Ed Genson and Sam Adam Jr., who recently joined the defense team.
Cook County prosecutors charged Kelly with 14 counts of child pornography in 2002 for allegedly videotaping himself having sex with a 14-year-old girl. Kelly has pleaded not guilty.
