Protests As Bush Art Is Pulled From Exhibit

Art Was Displayed While At Columbia College

GREEN BAY, Wis. (CBS) ― Students at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay have protested the chancellor's decision to pull a controversial piece of art from a campus gallery exhibit.

The art in question is a sheet of mock postage stamps called "Patriot Act" that shows President Bush with a gun pointed at his head. When the piece was displayed at Columbia College in Chicago last spring, Secret Service agents attended the opening to inspect it.

Chancellor Bruce Shepard pulled the piece from the exhibit, saying it was not appropriate for the university's gallery. That drew about 30 student demonstrators to the gallery Thursday night for the exhibit's opening.

"For us to not do anything ... would just be completely apathetic and not right, and we want people to know that we do care," said student Erica Millspaugh. "We want people to know that we're disappointed and we're upset about it."

Millspaugh got permission from "Patriot Act" artist Al Brandtner to print an image of the art on T-shirts and brochures used at the demonstration.

Shepard said he consulted with other chancellors in the UW System, the university's legal counsel and System President Kevin Reilly before pulling the piece from the exhibit "Axis of Evil: The Secret History of Sin."

"This is an exhibit that UWGB sponsors, and it's done with taxpayers' money. When we do this, we get to decide what we show and what types of messages we want to send out," Shepard said. "I don't want the reputation of UWGB to represent advocacy of assassination."
