City Hall Sources Say Village May Be Built On Michael Reese Campus

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Chicago's proposed Olympic Village for the 2016 summer games may be heading west from its original planned location.

Sources in City Hall told the Chicago Sun-Times that organizers plan to move the village west to the campus of Michael Reese Hospital, at 29th Street and Ellis Avenue several blocks inland from the lakefront.

The move could help cut costs and revitalize the Bronzeville neighborhood immediately to the south, according to organizers.

City officials will not comment on a report that they might by the 37-acre hospital campus. The Sun-Times said the hospital operates mostly out of four main buildings, but the campus has 17.

The original plan called for constructing the $1.1 billion complex Olympic Village just south of McCormick Place on the lakefront. It would be composed of between eight and 16 structures.

The village would serve as athlete housing for the Olympics, and then become a whole new Chicago neighborhood, with homes, apartments, hotels and businesses when the games are over.

The International Olympic Committee will award the Games in October 2009. Other expected bidders include Madrid, Prague, Rome, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo.
