Advocates Fight To Save Cemetery From O'Hare Plans

St. Johannes Cemetery Was Established In 1848

CHICAGO (AP) ― Advocates are fighting to save a cemetery that lies in the path of the proposed expansion at O'Hare International Airport.

The expansion plans call for the destruction of St. Johannes Cemetery, which was established in 1848.

But an attorney for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty says his group will go to court to try to block those plans if the Federal Aviation Administration approves the project as expected this month.

The group also is working on its public relations campaign and is sending letters to political leaders to support preservation of the DuPage County graveyard.

About 1,300 graves remain at the cemetery. But the city of Chicago says the land is needed for its effort to expand and modernize O'Hare to reduce delays.
