Deputy U.S. Marshal Pleads Not Guilty In Mob Leak

Prosecutors Say John Ambrose Leaked Information About Mob Witness

Get breaking news alerts
CHICAGO (AP) ― A deputy marshal in Chicago says he's not guilty of leaking information about a federally protected witness to reputed mobsters.

John Ambrose appeared briefly today before U.S. District Judge John Grady and entered his plea to the charges.

The 38-year-old Ambrose then left Chicago's Dirksen federal courthouse flanked by his defense attorney without commenting on the case.

Ambrose was assigned to guard Nicholas Calabrese -- the government's star witness in the Operation Family Secrets investigation of 18 old mob murders. Fourteen reputed mobsters and mob associates are charged in the case which is due to go to trial in May.

As a deputy marshal, Ambrose was assigned to protect Calabrese. But prosecutors contend he instead leaked information about the witness.
