Judge To Hear In Private Meeting If Man Wiretapped

CHICAGO (AP) ― Federal prosecutors say they will tell a judge during a private meeting whether the National Security Agency wiretapped a Des Plaines man accused of being a "sleeper agent" for Saddam Hussein.

Prosecutors told U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer during a hearing yesterday that the private meeting is necessary under an act that dictates how national security information can be used in court.

But a lawyer for Sami Latchin objected to a "secret presentation" in the case, saying the man has a right to know whether the NSA recorded his calls without a court order.

Pallmeyer said federal prosecutors can meet with her June 19.

Prosecutors allege that Latchin was sent by the Iraqi intelligence service to spy on Iraqi dissidents in Chicago from 1993 through mid-2002.

The case goes to trial in October.
