Weather Doesn't Hinder Mother's Day Celebrations

CHICAGO (CBS) ― For those walking around town Sunday, it didn't feel like 50 degree weather. But as CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports, the heavy winds and rain didn't stop people from getting the most out of Mother's Day.

They gripped their flipping umbrellas and braced themselves against the wind and rain, struggling to enjoy Mother's Day on Michigan Avenue – all except a trio from Canada.

"This is actually quite a nice day. And we're really enjoying it," said daughter Susie Britnell

It's "nice" if you're from Canada like mother Eve Munns and her two daughters, who are in town for a splash of shopping.

"I'm just a bit chilly --a bit chilly, "Munns said. "But it's nice to be with my daughters because I'm a mom."

And if you thought the weather in the heart of downtown Chicago was bad, the lakefront, at times, had wind gusts that pushed past 50 miles per hour. There were winds that pushed a lot of families indoors.

The Peninsula Hotel expected to greet about 550 people with a huge Mother's Day brunch – complete with Dim Sum, made-to-order omelets, and tiny burgers for tiny tots – a treat for weathering the weather.

"Rough getting started, because we come from Orland Park so the weather's been awful. But just to be with them and have a wonderful day is still a perfect day," said mom Linda Fogarty.

"Well, let me tell you, it was something awful, cold and rainy. But it was well worth it," said mom Robin Black-Burns.

"It's just great. And I'm happy to be here. I'm celebrating my 72nd birthday coming up," said grandmother Yvonne Black.

Her joy is understood by Carlton Blunt, a last-minute shopper who braved the weather for one reason.

"It's Mother's Day. You show up at somebody's mother's house without the flowers, you're dead," he said.
