Judge Won't Lighten Sentence Of Convicted Coach

WHEATON, Ill. (AP) ― A DuPage County judge has rejected an attorney's efforts reduce the 20-year sentence given to a former gymnastics coach convicted of molesting several girls during their lessons.

Prosecutors had sought at least a 35-year sentence for Michael Cardamone. The 29-year-old was convicted in March of molesting seven gymnasts between 1999 and 2002.

Cardamone had worked as a coach at the American Institute of Gymnastics in Aurora. It's owned by his family.

Prosecutors accused him of inappropriately touching girls between the ages of five and 14 during stretching exercises and in a private room at the gym.

Cardamone's defense attorney said at a hearing yesterday that Cardamone maintains his innocence.
