Daley: The Red Sox Respect The White Sox Today

Chicago's Biggest Fan Talks To CBS 2's Randy Salerno and Roseanne Tellez

CHICAGO (CBS) ― He runs the city, but Mayor Daley's other passion is undoubtedly the White Sox.

One of Chicago's most famous fans spoke with Randy Salerno and Roseanne Tellez about the exciting playoff series.

Roseanne: Thank you for joining us, mayor. Congratulations!

Daley: Good morning, Roseanne and Randy. How are you? Great morning.

Roseanne: Yesterday, if you had to pick a moment, a hero, what was the best moment for you in the game?

Daley: I think it was the whole team pitching in and of course defense and hitting. You really have to give credit to this team. They've been underestimated all year. The national and local press always just said it was just luck, but they have a great team and their chemistry's working together and give Ozzie and Jerry Reinsdorf a lot of credit there. But it was just the entire game from the first pitch and all the way to the last pitch.

Randy: Boy, they shut some people up yesterday, didn't they, in the last week of the season? Mayor, who's your favorite player? Please just pick one.

Daley: I like A.J., the catcher… I like Paul Konerko. I think the two of them are great leaders on the team, and the pitching staff is unbelievable. I think you can go from one pitcher to another pitcher and they really come through as an entire team. So, like anything else, maybe your politicians say they're all great, but they play as a team and I think that's unusual for any baseball or sports team. They're really together, and I like that.

Roseanne: What would your father have felt about yesterday's game and the season?

Daley: Well, I think he'd be looking down, and my mother, just as excited as I am or anyone else in Chicago who's a White Sox fan, to see this team be underestimated and come through. That's the key in Chicago. They came through, and yesterday was a great victory, and it's going to be a tough series and a tough game tonight, and I think that's how the team looks at it. They respect the Boston Red Sox. Just because one victory, they're not going to slack off. They understand this is a good team.

Randy: Absolutely. Now mayor, don't you think as this goes on and the White Sox keep rolling here, that maybe the national press will pick up and see what a great story this is? You've got Ozzie, who's just a quote machine. You've got this cast of characters. Don't you think this is a watershed moment for the team if they keep rolling?

Daley: I think it should have been a couple of weeks ago. They've got one of the best records in the league, but they've just been underestimated at the beginning. They looked at just a group of young guys coming together, it didn't matter. And I don't think they realize the hitting strength they have, the fielding, especially the pitching. They've been underestimated all year, and I think they should show respect for the White Sox and the team, especially Ozzie as well.

Randy: Maybe this is working for them. This underdog thing is working for them. Maybe they don't want publicity until after the World Series.

Daley: Oh, I think it is. It's working because everybody's just saying well, they're not respected on the field. I think the Red Sox realized they respect the Red Sox, and the Red Sox respect the White Sox today.
