Chicagoans are getting a better idea of how the city will position itself for the
Olympics.
In an exclusive interview via satellite from London, the mayor told CBS 2's Chief Correspondent Jay Levine how the city will be branded for its 2016 Olympic bid.
The mayor came to the enclosed, elevated viewing platform for a first hand look at the 2012 summer Olympic site.
Just like the stadium Chicago is planning for
Washington Park, which will leave a 15,000 seat amphitheater on Chicago's
South Side, London has big plans for a rundown industrial site on the outskirts of the city.
There's a lot of work ahead in London, and less than six years to do it. Though some say the heavy lifting, actually winning the games, has already been done.
Meeting with the mayor Prime Minister
Tony Blair and former Olympian
Sebastian Coe, suggested a new component to the coalition backing Chicago's 2016 bid.
"That's who'll make the presentation -- children, another generation, which they did here in London. How it was basically important to the children of this great city and country to come forward they want the Olympics," said Daley.
But the most important thing the mayor may have learned in his visits to three successful bidders, Beijing, Athens and now London: "You have to have a vision of why you want the Olympics in your city," said Daley.
For Beijing, it was a coming out party. For Athens, an ancient city entering the modern era. For London, the global metropolis. For Chicago, we're a city of immigrants.
It's a theme used before, with our annual marathon routed through the city's ethnic neighborhoods. For 2016 the mayor envisions the world coming to Chicago and finding the world is already here.
